Meet the Conservation Captains: A New Era of Leadership in the Parks

In April 2025, we launched our Conservation Captain Program — a bold new step to expand Get Outside Alliance’s impact and empower longtime volunteers to take the lead in protecting our Texas State Parks.

Until now, every single one of our 61 volunteer projects had been led by one (or all) of our three founders. But as we’ve grown, so has our community — and we knew it was time to share the reins. Fourteen dedicated individuals, many of whom have been volunteering with us for years, completed in-depth onboarding and leadership training to become Conservation Captains. With their help, we’re adding regular monthly volunteer days at Brazos Bend and Huntsville State Parks and raising the bar from 20 to 30 projects a year. Our goal? To make this model scalable, bringing more parks and more people into this mission. As funding and demand grow, we’ll open new captain application windows — but for now, we’re proud to say this isn’t just an expansion. It’s a movement.
